When A Cookie Isn’t Just A Cookie

Oh forbidden foods! How often do you look at a cookie/cake/pastry/insert favorite treat here and think about how much you want it, but shouldn’t have it? How much do you obsess about it? Probably until you eat it, right? Or, if you do decide to eat it right away, how long do you obsess about your choice and beat yourself up? When did treats become the Black Plague? We have become a food obsessed society. We obsess when we tell ourselves we can’t have it and we obsess when we “give in” an do eat it. Talk about a no win situation! How often have you allowed yourself to eat a treat only to shame yourself into eating more and more? Does it happen several times per week? Do you tell yourself that tomorrow or Monday (because diets start on Mondays right?) will be different? Is this pattern driving you crazy? It certainly doesn’t seem like a way to live. What would happen if you gave yourself unconditional permission to eat? People think that they would just go off the deep end. Maybe for a bit, but it wouldn’t last very long. The thing that keeps this obsession in place is telling yourself you can’t or shouldn’t have something. Most humans have a bit of a defiant streak. I know I do! The more you tell me I can’t do something, the more I say, “watch me”. Sound familiar. Defiance is all about control. If there is one thing that most of us hate, it is being controlled. Yet, by trying so hard to control your relationship with food, it ends up controlling you. Again, no way to live. By releasing your emotional attachments to food, you truly can start to let go of this overwhelming obsession. If you want to learn more about how to do that, contact me today!
